چکیده
Abstract Injection of volatile-rich mafic magma prior to an eruption may trigger episodes volcanism and can act transfer metals from depth. The study enclaves dispersed within products provide insights into interaction between deep shallow reservoirs. The bioreactivity of the sub-10 μm component of volcanic ash: Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat.
With the recent eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyafallajökull and resulting ash cloud over much of Europe there was considerable concern about possible respiratory hazards. Volcanic ash can contain minerals that are known human respiratory health hazards such as cristobalite. Short-term ash exposures can cause skin sores, respiratory and ocular irritations and exacerbation of pre-existing lu...
متن کاملMagma flow instability and cyclic activity at soufriere hills volcano, montserrat, british west indies
Dome growth at the Soufriere Hills volcano (1996 to 1998) was frequently accompanied by repetitive cycles of earthquakes, ground deformation, degassing, and explosive eruptions. The cycles reflected unsteady conduit flow of volatile-charged magma resulting from gas exsolution, rheological stiffening, and pressurization. The cycles, over hours to days, initiated when degassed stiff magma retarde...
متن کاملSensitivity of OMI SO2 measurements to variable eruptive behaviour at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat
Since 2004, the satellite-borne Ozone Mapping Instrument (OMI) has observed sulphur dioxide (SO2) plumes during both quiescence and effusive eruptive activity at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat. On average, OMI detected a SO2 plume 4-6 times more frequently during effusive periods than during quiescence in the 2008-2010 period. The increased ability of OMI to detect SO2 during eruptive peri...
متن کاملGeodetic constraints on the shallow magma system at Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat
[1] Ground surface tilts recorded proximal to a growing lava dome, and sustained through repeated dome collapses, provide unique geodetic constraints on the depth, size, and overpressures of the shallow magmatic system at Soufrière Hills Volcano. Tilt records identify a single pressure-source inflating with periods 3–30 h. Sustained tilt amplitude ratios for paired stations identify the pressur...
متن کاملCoupled subdaily and multiweek cycles during the lava dome eruption of Soufrire Hills Volcano, Montserrat
[1] Observations of volcanoes extruding andesitic lava to produce lava domes often reveal cyclic behavior. At Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, cycles with subdaily and multiweek periods have been recognized on many occasions. Observations clearly show that the period of subdaily cycles is modulated by the multiweek cycle. The subdaily and multiweek cycles have been modeled separately as sti...
